Freshmen beat tough Brandon Valley team The Vermillion High School freshman football team beat a tough Brandon Valley team Sept. 10, 30-24, in triple overtime.
The game was a defensive battle with neither side giving up. For Vermillion, the first score came on a three-yard run by Thad Roche. Brandon Valley quickly countered with a score of their own, tying the game at 6.
Brandon Valley added another touchdown in the fourth quarter, taking the lead 12-6. Vermillion responded by driving 80 yards, capped off with Roche's second touchdown run of two yards.
With the fourth quarter ending at a stalemate, the game proceeded to sudden death. Brandon Valley won the toss and elected to take the ball first. They scored on fourth down to turn the pressure up on Vermillion.
VHS responded with Roche's third touchdown run of two yards to force a double overtime.
Brandon Valley had the ball first again and proceeded to score the go-ahead touchdown. Vermillion responded with a ten-yard pass from Kris Hoffman to Clint Christensen for the tying touchdown.
Brandon Valley started the third overtime with the ball and fumbled on their first play. Hoffman recovered the fumble to give Vermillion a chance to win the game. On the second play Dave Hanson scored on a six-yard run to give Vermillion the win.
The VHS defense was led by Roche with 12 tackles and 1 fumble recovery. Hanson had 9, Christensen 6, Hoffman 5, along with 2 fumble recoveries, 1 interception and 1 pass break up; Andrew Knutson had 5 and Ray O'Conner 4.
Rushing stats included: Thad Roche 26 carries for 100 yards; Eric Richord 7-43; Dave Hanson 12-63; Kris Hoffman 5-25. Receiving stats: Clint Christensen 2-12; Roche 1-1. Passing stats: Hoffman 3-11 for 11 yards, 1 touchdown and 3 interceptions.
Vermillion is now 2-0 and Brandon falls to 0-1. Vermillion played Canton Sept. 17 at home and will visit Sioux City East on Tuesday, Sept. 22 at 4:30 p.m. On Thursday, Sept. 24, VHS will travel to Lennox to play at 5 p.m.
