Letters Donations welcome for Veterans Memorial

To the Editor:

The Clay County Veterans Memorial Committee is in the process of raising funds to build the Clay County Veterans Memorial.

This memorial, when completed will be dedicated by the mayor, the City Council and the Clay County Commissioners in memory of all veterans who have served or who are presently serving in all branches of the armed forces. This project has been the dream and goal of many people in Vermillion, the surrounding community and the county for many years.

The Clay County Veterans Memorial originated from monuments purchased by Kenneth Mockler who originally built a memorial at his home east of Vermillion. The City of Vermillion inherited Mr. Mockler's farm on August 11, 1995. The city has donated the Mockler monuments and the City Veterans Memorial, presently located in Prentis Park, to the project.

The Clay County Commissioners have agreed to provide the land to be used for the new Clay County Veterans Memorial on the southeast corner of the Clay County Courthouse Lawn. The county will maintain the grounds and the City of Vermillion will provide the electricity and maintain the lighting for the new memorial. It is through the combined efforts and the generosity of the City of Vermillion, Clay County and Kenny Mockler that this project is at last getting off to a good start.

The committee has a plan for a beautiful memorial designed by Architect Sandy Dickenson with the direction of the memorial committee. The committee, appointed by Vermillion Mayor William Radigan, has held 26 meetings totaling in excess of 300 individual hours to bring the project to this, the funding stage. We are currently in the process of raising approximately $50,000 to make this memorial a reality.

Phase two of our fund raising project is to seek donations from the people and businesses in the area. Donations of any size will be greatly appreciated and all dollars will be used for the memorial.

With a donation of $50 or more you will be mailed a certificate listing the amount of your donation and the name or names you provide to us. Veterans' names will be on the certificate only. No names will appear on the memorial.

Once again, donations of any amount, no matter how small or large, are needed and will be greatly appreciated. Your donation is tax deductible.

Donations may be mailed to: City of Vermillion, Attn. Veterans Memorial, 25 Center Street, Vermillion, SD 57069, and checks made payable to City of Vermillion/ Veterans Memorial.

We sincerely thank you.

Sincerely,

Clay County

Memorial Committee
