Tanagers lose close game by Vicky Lio The Vermillion High School Tanager football team lost to West Central Friday by a small margin of three points.
The game ended with a score of 21-24, with a field goal pulling West Central into a victory on their homecoming night.
For both No. 1 West Central and No. 2 Vermillion, the game was a battle to the end.
Vermillion began the series of scoring with a touchdown in the first quarter by Jay Merrigan.
In the second quarter, James Ofstehage scored the second touchdown by catching a 33-yard pass by Merrigan. Merrigan also scored the two-point conversion.
West Central scored a touchdown in both the second and third quarters.
Vermillion took the lead with 10:15 left in the game when Louis Sitting Crow scored a touchdown with an 80-yard run. Merrigan scored a one-point conversion.
West Central came back and tied the score.
With 54 seconds on the clock, West Central had possession of the ball. The Tanagers came in on a tackle and put the Trojans on the 25 yard line.
Finally, West Central made their three-point field goal.
By the end of the game, Vermillion had a total of 12 first downs, 169 yards of rushing, 24 attempts on rushing, 104 yards of passing, six out of nine completed passes and a grand total of 273 yards offensively.
"We played very well against a good West Central team. It was too bad that there could only be one winner, and Vermillion came up on the short side of the ledger," said Head Coach Gary Culver.
Vermillion is looking for a win over Lennox on homecoming Friday night. Kick-off will be at 7 p.m.
The Tanagers lead the Orioles with a series record of 19 and 6. The last time Lennox beat Vermillion was in 1986.
Merrigan and Jesse Paulson each made seven tackles. Merrigan assisted in eight and Paulson assisted in four. Tom Dorcey made five tackles and assisted in five. Cory Novak made three tackles and assisted in two.
