USD championship team to hold reunion The 1998 season marks the 20th anniversary of the last North Central Conference football championship won by South Dakota. The 1978 Coyotes, under the guidance of head coach Beanie Cooper, finished with an overall record of 7-4 and 5-0-1 in the conference.
Members of the NCC champions are holding a reunion this Friday and Saturday. They will be recognized during a halftime ceremony Saturday when the Coyotes host Mankato State in the North Central Conference opener at 6 p.m.
The 1978 Coyotes were led by the likes of senior center Mike Schurrer (NCC most valuable offensive lineman), senior free safety Bill Moats (NCC most valuable defensive back), senior Russ Dokken (all-conference tight end), senior Dave Hultgren (all-conference defensive end), junior Dave Schwab (all-conference defensive tackle) and junior Ben Long (all-conference linebacker).
The Coyotes opened the season with a 1-3 record, but after venturing to Fargo, ND and pinning a 17-14 loss on North Dakota State, the Coyotes put together five more wins capped by a 21-3 victory over Nebraska-Omaha for the NCC title.
During the six-game run, the Coyote defense allowed teams only 7.0 points per game, while the USD offense averaged 24.3 points per game.
