Artists scheduled for school residency

Artists scheduled for school residency Writers Daryl Ngee Chinn and Marcella Remund will conduct workshops for local students as part of the South Dakota Arts Council's Artists-In-Schools program. The artists will work with the sixth-grade students at Vermillion Middle School from Oct. 8 through Oct. 21.

Chinn, who is a poet and artist-in-residence since 1986 for the states of Alaska, California, Montana and Nevada, with experience in the Arts-in-Corrections program of California, will guide students into diving into language, feelings, families, and their communities. Remund, a local poet, will collaborate with Chinn during the residency.

This residency will help student-writers learn how to play with, write with, look at, recite, read and perform their work. Senses will be sharpened, working with and respecting others encouraged, and a publication of student writings may be produced. Classroom sessions will include exercises dedicated to examining the environment of each student, in the home, the family, the community and the world of nature.

The program is sponsored by the sixth-grade students of Vermillion Middle School, with support provided by the South Dakota Arts Council with funds from the state of South Dakota and the National Endowment of the Arts.
