Deadline nears for academy The final application deadline for entrance into the United States Service Academies is fast approaching, according to Sen. Tom Daschle. Daschle said applications for the 1999-2000 school year at the Military Academy at West Point, NY, the Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD, the Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, CO, and the Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, NY, must be completed by Oct. 31.
"Each year many talented and qualified young South Dakotans apply for a limited number of positions at our service academies," Daschle said. "In order to ensure that all applicants receive full consideration, applications should be turned in by Oct. 31."
South Dakota residents between the ages of 17 and 22 can apply to any of the four service academies if they meet eligibility requirements in leadership, physical aptitude, scholarship and character.
After reviewing the applications, Daschle and his Academy Advisory Committee, made up of South Dakotans with various military backgrounds, will make final recommendations to the academies by Jan. 31. The academies will make offers of appointment in the spring. People with questions about the application process should contact Sen. Daschle's office in Sioux Falls: PO Box 1274, Sioux Falls, 57101.
