Deaths Phil Crew
A memorial service for Phil Crew will be Friday, Oct. 16 at the United Methodist Church in Vermillion at 2 p.m.
Mr. Crew died Oct. 13, 1998 in Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton following a lengthy illness. A full obituary will follow in next week's issue of the Plain Talk.
Roger Hale Jr.
Funeral services for Roger Hale Jr., 24, Omaha, NE, were held Oct. 12 at the Zion Lutheran Church, Creighton, NE.
Rev. Paul Banitt officiated, with burial in Greenwood Cemetery in Creighton.
Brockhaus Funeral Home in Creighton, was in charge of arrangements.
Roger died Thursday, Oct. 8, 1998 following a traffic accident near Kearney, NE.
Roger A.E. Hale Jr., son of Roger Sr. and Barbara (Lally) Hale, was born Feb. 4, 1974 in Portland, OR. He received most of his education in West Linn, OR, and graduated from West Linn High School. He attended Greenville High School in Michigan from 1991-93.
He moved to Creighton, NE in June, 1994 and attended Wayne State College from 1994-97. Roger moved to Omaha and was an honor student at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, majoring in business and education. He volunteered as an instructor for the American Red Cross.
Survivors include his parents, Roger Hale Sr. and Barbara Hale of Creighton; sister Kimberly "K. Lee" Hale of Phoenix, AZ; grandmother Alvena Hale of Vermillion; aunts and uncles Normagene and Vernon Hughes of Sioux City, IA, Michele and Gary Grover of Omaha, V. Hale Starr of Carefree, AZ, Mary Hale of Austin, TX, LuRay and Barbara Hale of Sacramento, CA, and Bobbie and Henry Okazaki of Portland, OR.
LuVern M. Ellis
LuVern M. Ellis, 81, Centerville, died Oct. 8, 1998 at the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.
Funeral services were held Oct. 12 at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, Centerville, with Father Denis Meier officiating.
Burial was in Riverview Cemetery, rural Centerville.
LuVern M. Johnson was born Oct. 10, 1916 to Oscar and Mary Ann (Donahue) Johnson near Centerville in rural Clay County.
She received her early education in Clay County and graduated from Centerville High School in 1934. After completing high school she worked as a telephone operator in Centerville.
She married Kennard Ellis on Nov. 28, 1940 in Redwood Falls, MN. The couple farmed north of Centerville until they retired and moved into town in 1994.
LuVern worked for many years as a waitress at Truck Towne Cafe and Tolly's Cafe, both in Beresford, and at JoDean's Steakhouse in Centerville.
LuVern was a member of the Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Centerville, the Good Shepherd Altar Society and the Centerville American Legion Auxiliary. LuVern enjoyed bowling, cooking, baking and being with family and friends.
LuVern was preceded in death by her parents and her two brothers John and Ardell.
Survivors include her husband Kennard of Centerville; two sons, Larry and his wife Karen of Centerville, and Lynn and his wife Marge of Beresford; four daughters, Jean and her husband Paul Peterson, Jane and her husband Roger Knutson, Jackie and her husband Wayne Nelson, all of Centerville, and Jill and her husband Mike Kjose of Vermillion; 21 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Berenice and her husband Curtis Jacobson of St. Paul, MN, and Joanne and her husband Lowell Duncan of Alcester; two sisters-in-law, Betty Johnson of Sioux Falls and Helen Johnson of St. Paul, MN; and several nieces and nephews and a host of good friends.
