Freshmen escape with 16-14 win The Vermillion High School freshman football team escaped with a 16-14 victory over an excellent Lennox team on Sept. 24.
Vermillion's first score came on their opening drive with Thad Roche going off tackle for a 16-yard touchdown. Roche also scored the 2 points on the conversion.
Lennox then took control of the ball and marched down the field to score a touchdown and 2-point conversion to tie the game.
Vermillion scored its second touchdown before the half. A Roche 48-yard ramble set up a Kris Hoffman 3-yard score, with Roche powering in the extra points.
Lennox scored late in the fourth quarter to come within 2 points but the pursuing onside kick was recovered by Clint Christensen.
Defensively for Vermillion: Roche 12 tackles; Dave Hansen 8; Oliver Hope 7; Casey Gale 6; Christensen 6; Eric Rasmussen 4; and Ray O'Conner 4.
Rushing: Roche 20/160; Hanson 5/35; Eric Richord 4/12; Hoffman 4/12.
Passing: Hoffman 0/3/10 yards.
Vermillion played Yankton on Thursday, Oct. 1 and will host Crofton at home on Oct. 8 at 4:30 p.m. They will play Sioux Falls Washington on Oct. 15 away at 4:30.
