JV girls basketball update Vermillion 41
Beresford 18
The Vermillion Tanager JV basketball team defeated the Beresford Watchdog JV team 41-18 in basketball action Sept. 8.
Vermillion led 11-4 at the end of the first quarter, and Beresford was never able to come close. Vermillion was ahead at halftime 23-8, and had a 32-12 lead at the end of the third quarter.
"We got off to a good start and never looked back," Coach Kelly Fischbach said. "We had a good defensive effort, holding them to 18 points."
Leading scorers include Alison Obr, 14 points; Elly Kjose, 8 points; Nancy Heine, 6 points; Kathy Plate, 4 points; Jaclyn Powell, Leslie Larson, Sarah Mollett and Melissa Rydell, each with 2 points; and Carey Engstrom, 1 point.
Larson had 11 rebounds and 2 blocked shots. Rydell had 7 rebounds, 1 assist and 3 blocked shots. Plate had 3 rebounds, 1 assist and 4 steals.
Obr had 4 rebounds and 1 assist; Kjose had 2 rebounds and 3 steals; Heine had 2 assists; Powell had 1 assist and Engstrom had 1 rebound.
Vermillion 31
S.F. Lincoln 25
Thanks to excellent defensive play, the Vermillion Tanager JV basketball team defeated the Sioux Falls Lincoln JV team 31-25 in basketball action Sept. 12.
Vermillion led 7-5 at the end of the first quarter, but the two teams found themselves tied 11-11 at halftime. Vermillion was able to pull away slightly by the end of the third quarter, with a 22-19 lead.
"It was an excellent defensive game," Coach Kelly Fischbach said. "This is the best defensive effort so far this year. It is great to beat an AA opponent. It says a lot for how hard our kids have been working."
Leading scorers include Sarah Mollet, 10 points; Alison Obr, 6 points; Jaclyn Powell and Melissa Rydell with 4 points each; Leslie Larson and Nancy Heine with 3 points each; and Carey Engstrom with 1 point.
Larson had 13 rebounds; Mollett had 7 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal; Rydell had 3 rebounds and 4 steals; Obr had 3 rebounds and 2 steals; Powell had 1 rebound, 1 assist, and 1 steal; and Engstrom had 1 rebound and 1 steal.

Canton 30
The Vermillion JV basketball team just squeaked by the Canton C-Hawks 31-30 in action Sept. 15.
Vermillion trailed at the end of the first quarter 6-10, but battled back and took over a 20-16 lead at halftime. Vermillion maintained that edge at the end of the third quarter with 25-20 score over Canton.
"We got off to a slow start and never seemed to get into a good rhythm all night," Coach Kelly Fischbach said. "We did play a good second quarter, and that's what allowed us to win. Both teams had a terrible night at the free throw line. This is an area where we must improve."
Elly Kjose had 14 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals. Leslie Larson has 5 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 steals. Alison Obr had 4 points, 2 rebounds, and 1 steal.
Melissa Rydell scored 3 points, and had 6 rebounds and 2 steals. Sarah Mollet had 3 points and 3 rebounds; Kathy Plate had 2 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 blocked shots; Nancy Heine had 2 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 steal; and Kayla Larson had 1 assist and 1 steal; and Meggie Donnelly had 1 assist.
