O'Connor to participate in national program Due to her outstanding performance in the State Distinguished Youth Program, Katie O'Connor, daughter of Michael and Janelle O'Connor of Alcester, has been invited to participate in the National Distinguished Youth of America Scholarship and Recognition Program Oct. 9-11 in Minneapolis, MN.
There she will join other state award winners from across the nation who will compete for awards and prizes totaling nearly $12,000.
The Distinguished Youth Program, founded in 1995 in Minneapolis, MN, is designed to recognize girls who rank high academically and who are leaders in their schools and communities.
It is a "younger sister program" to the Miss Teen of America Scholarship and Recognition Pageant, which has been recognizing and rewarding the nation's top teenage female achievers for 15 years. Both programs are meant to accent the positive qualities of today's youth, foster and promote worthwhile ideals, and bring their accomplishments to the attention of America.
The National Distinguished Youth Program judging criteria includes scholastic record, activities and service in school and community, personality projection and poise and judge's interview.
Katie will be sponsored in the program by Clay-Union Electric, Dallas Jewelry, Vermillion Fertilizer, Steve and Peggy Donnelly, Rallins-Tyler Insurance, State Bank of Alcester, Pedersen Machine, and the Beresford Elevator.
