VHS made 13 first downs thanks to 222 yards of rushing and 57 yards for 279 offensive yards. by Vicky Lio After a three point loss to West Central, the Vermillion Tanagers football team came back Friday, Sept. 25, to dominate their homecoming game in the DakotaDome against Lennox.
Vermillion was victorious, beating Lennox by a score of 34-6.
With the help of Cory Novak's blocked punt, Justin Griffith made a touchdown starting a series of scores for Vermillion.
Louis Sitting Crow had an outstanding night. He scored four touchdowns and carried the ball 15 times for 141 yards.
The Tanagers scored 6 points in the first quarter, 22 points in the second quarter, and 6 points in the third quarter.
The Orioles scored their six points in the final quarter.
Jay Merrigan passed 10 times and completed 3 for 39 yards.
Jessie Paulson led the team in tackles with 8. Tom Dorcey made 7, Landon Morse had 6 tackles, and Chris Sinkie had 5 tackles.
At the end of the game, VHS had made 13 first downs thanks to 222 yards of rushing, 57 yards of passing for a grand total of 279 offensive yards.
Lennox made 7 first downs with 141 yards of rushing, 27 yards of passing and 168 total yards.
The Tanager coaching staff was extremely pleased with the way their athletes played. "We dominated in every category," Head Coach Gary Culver said. "It was also nice to be able to play all of the players."
With this game, Vermillion raised its record to 4-1.
Culver plans to have the players continue to make improvements in all areas of the game.
The next game will be in the Cardinal Athletic Complex football field against South Sioux City Nebraska. Kick off is at 7:30 p.m.
