Used book sale set Nov. 5-8 The Friends of the Vermillion Public Library will sponsor the library's annual used book sale in the community room of the library on Thursday through Sunday, Nov. 5-8.
Several new bargain packages will be available this year: fill a plastic grocery bag of books for $3; a paper grocery bag of books for $4; a box of books for $5; and a canvas book bag featuring the library logo for $6.50.
Since the new children's story and activity room has eliminated much of the space previously used for used book storage, there is a greater than usual need to cut down the used book inventory. This will result in bargain prices for the reading public.
The Friends will contribute 50 percent of the proceeds from the sale to the Hanson-McCook Regional Library in Spencer, which lost its building and 75 percent of its book collection in the June 5 tornado. Thus, Vermillion readers can help a neighboring community while building their own personal libraries.
Thousands of paperback and hard-cover books (some donated by the public and some discarded from the library) will be offered at prices from 25 to 50.
Some reference books, such as encyclopedias, are priced as sets. In addition, there are sweatshirts, note cards, book marks and novelty pens.
Book sale hours coincide with regular library hours: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday; and 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday. On Thursday night, Nov. 5, preceding the sale, members of the Friends of the Vermillion Public Library have the "first-nighter" privileges of a preview sale from 6 to 9 p.m. This privilege is also open to new members who pay their dues on the spot: $7 for individuals; $5 for senior citizens and full-time students; and $10 for families.
Proceeds of the sale which do not go to the Spencer library will be used to provide extra benefits to the Vermillion Public Library.
