Varsity soccer team plays strong Vermillion's girls varsity soccer team played a tough competitor in the Roosevelt Rough Riders on Saturday, Sept. 26 in Sioux Falls.
The Rough Riders came out strong and scored the first goal against Vermillion, but the Vermillion girls came back fighting and scored the next three goals.
Roosevelt fought back just before half time and scored again against Vermillion, making the score 3-2 at half time.
The second half was an intense battle for both teams, with Vermillion winning 6-4. Scoring for Vermillion were Michelle Rasmussen, Kelly Peterson and Kayla Larson.
Vermillion's strong defense was led by Hillary Pederson and Natasha Peyton as goalies, Amy Petrovich, Megan Tolsma, Nina Joy, Frankie Florres, and Katie Carlson as defensive backs, Kim Hoffman, Courtney Nelsen, Tressa Olson, Nicole Pedersen, Sarah Iles, and Abby Madsen as half backs.
Heading the offense was Michelle Rasmussen and Kayla Larson as strikers, and Kelly Peterson, Lena Johnson and Shawna Baron as wings. Coach for the team is Jeff Pederson.
Vermillion's second game on Saturday was against Lead-Deadwood. Vermillion won by a score of 3-1. Scoring for Vermillion were Lena Johnson, Kelly Peterson and Courtney Nelsen.
Vermillion's third game of the weekend was against the Lincoln Patriots on Sunday, Sept. 27. Vermillion ended the weekend by losing to the patriots with a score of 1-4.
Michelle Rasmussen scored Vermillion's only goal with Courtney Nelson assisting. This was the Vermillion girls varsity soccer team's first loss of the season.
Their next games are Sunday Oct. 4 in Yankton against Yankton and Brookings, with the state tournament in Pierre on Oct. 9-10.
