Vermillion freshman team upsets undefeated Huskies by David Lias In a terrific effort praised by their coach, the VHS freshman Tanagers pulled off an upset against the Elk Point-Jefferson freshman Huskies 38-35 in girls basketball Oct. 19 at Vermillion.
Elk Point-Jefferson had an undefeated season record going into this game with Vermillion. Vermillion improved its season mark to 8-4.
Vermillion's Meggie Donnelly hit 8-12 from the free throw line and finished with 12 points and 5 assists. Alison Obr added 12 points and 4 rebounds. For EP-J, Sarah Patnaude scored 14 points.
"Alison and Meggie did a nice job attacking the basket," said Vermillion Coach Troy Terronez. "By doing that, they got to the free throw line and hit 12 of 14 foul shots."
The Tanagers jumped ahead 11-7 after the opening period, the game was knotted 21-21 after the second quarter, and the Tanagers led 33-27 after the third period.
"We played together as a team both offensively and defensively," said Coach Terronez. "The girls did a good job getting the ball to the open girl on offense, and they gave each other help on the defensive end. They did what it took to win."
