VHS Tanagers shoot down Yankton Gazelles team 55-31 by David Lias Putting together a praised effort, the VHS freshman Tanagers pulled away in the second half to shoot down the Yankton freshman Gazelles 55-31 in girls basketball Oct. 6 at Yankton.
Vermillion's Alison Obr scored 14 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. Meggie Donnelly also scored 14 points, had 5 rebounds, and 4 assists. Ashley Thompson added 10 points and Carrie Engstrom added 8 points and 7 rebounds.
"The girls worked together as a team and a balanced scoring attack made us difficult to guard," said Vermillion Coach Troy Terronez. "Everyone played with confidence."
The Tanagers jumped ahead 13-8 after the opening period, went into the locker room up 24-19 at halftime, and then held a lead of 46-27 going into the fourth quarter.
"We played aggressive defense for 32 minutes, which was an important factor in the game," said Coach Terronez. "This forced 12 turnovers and the girls finished the lay-ups for high percentage shots. This was our best performance of the season thus far."
Vermillion improved its record to 6-4, while Yankton dropped to 6-5.
A number of excellent individual efforts highlighted the win.
"Teamwork contributed to this win," Coach Terronez said. "Every player performed at or above the level necessary to compete with a AA team like Yankton."
