VHS tennis team nets 3 victories It was a busy two weeks for the Vermillion High School girls tennis team, which resulted in three wins and two losses for the Tanagers.
On Sept. 15, singles wins by Tracey Walworth, Anna Ristic, Lindsay Iverson, Vanessa Noonan and Laura Doohen and a doubles win by Walworth/Ristic gave the girls a 6-3 victory over Madison.
Laura Doohen clinched a 5-4 win over arch-rival Yankton on Sept. 17 as she won her No. 6 singles match in a tiebreaker.
The next week found the Tanagers traveling to Brandon Valley for a repeat match and defeating the Lynx 7-2. Winners for Vermillion were Walworth, Ristic, Katie Talley, Noonan, and Doohen in singles and Walworth/Ristic and Noonan/ Doohen in doubles.
VHS hosted the O'Gorman varsity squad on Sept. 24 and the Tanagers were defeated 9-0.
"I was pleased with how the girls played against one of the top-ranked teams in the state," said Barb Rickord, VHS coach. "Their No. 1, 2, and 3 girls are returning state champs in their respective flights, and our girls were able to keep the points going and make them earn their wins."
In a match against Mitchell on Sept. 28, VHS lost 6-3 with Walworth and Ristic coming away with wins in singles and doubles.
The Tanagers played Sioux Falls Washington on Oct. 1 and finish their regular season against the 1997 state team winner Sioux Falls Lincoln on Oct. 6. The state tournament is Oct. 8-10 in Sioux Falls.
