Washington defeats VHS freshmen 44-32 The VHS freshman Tanagers watched a second-half lead fade away and lost to the Sioux Falls Washington Warriors 44-32 in girls basketball Oct.1 at Sioux Falls.

Vermillion had lead by three at halftime.

"Vermillion's Meryll Kennedy had 6 rebounds and Abby Moore had 7 rebounds," said Coach Troy Terronez. "Meggie Donnelly scored 7 points and Alison Obr added 6 points. For Washington, Ashley Olson scored 10 points to lead the Warriors."

After a scoreless first quarter, the Tanagers led 17-14 at halftime, and then trailed 32-24 going into the final period.

"We played a solid first half but foul trouble hurt us down the stretch," said Coach Terronez.

"Once our guards were out of the game, they picked up the pressure and outscored us 19-7 in the third quarter."

The Vermillion season mark fell to 5-4.

Individual Stats, Vermillion: Scoring � Meggie Donnelly, 7 points; Alison Obr, 6 points; Carey Engstrom, 5 points.
