Freshmen end season with win by David Lias The VHS freshmen Tanagers topped Yankton 38-34 in girls basketball Nov. 2 at Vermillion in a matchup that was close throughout.
This was the Tanager freshmen team's last game of the season. Vermillion improved its season mark to 12-4.
Corey Engstrom led with 12 points, 8 rebounds, and Meggie Donnelly had 8 points and 6 steals. For Yankton, Steph Bulison and Paise Kindle each had 14 points.
"Meggie and Corey did a nice job attacking the basket, and pressuring the ball defensively," said Vermillion Coach Troy Terronez.
The Tanagers led 9-8 after the first quarter, led 21-18 at halftime, and then led 31-28 after the third period.
"We did a great job of controlling the boards," said Coach Terronez. "Our girls grabbed 27 rebounds while Yankton had 15. This definitely cut down on Yankton's shooting percentage."
The close win had several contributors to the cause.
"Ashley Thompson had 4 points and 5 rebounds," Coach Terronez said. "The girls controlled the ball well at the end of the game. They were patient and did what was needed to come out on top. Alison Obr had 4 points and 3 assists; Kayla Larson and Meryll Kennedy each had 3 points, and Tessa Tuetken and Megan Kruse each had 2 points."
