Freshmen Tanagers beat Dakota Valley by David Lias The VHS freshmen Tanagers rallied in the second half and then pulled away to beat Dakota Valley 34-24 in girls basketball Oct. 24 at Vermillion.
Vermillion had trailed by three at halftime.
Vermillion's Alison Obr dropped in 10 points and grabbed 11 boards, while Meggie Donnelly added 9 points and 5 assists. Carey Engstrom also contributed 8 points and 8 rebounds.
"The way these girls distributed the ball and controlled the boards gave us the opportunity for the win," said Vermillion Coach Troy Terronez.
Dakota Valley freshmen jumped in front 4-3 after the first quarter, and held an edge of 13-11 in the second quarter. Vermillion had an advantage of 14-4 in the third period to take a lead of 28-21 going into the final period.
"Our defense in the first, third, and fourth quarters was outstanding," said Coach Terronez. "When a team holds another to 12 points in three quarters, that team is destined to win."
Vermillion improved its season mark to 10-4.
The Tanagers had several fine individual efforts in the victory.
"Ashley Bjorkman came into the game and opened things up inside by hitting a few shots," Coach Terronez said. "It's nice to see different players stepping up the level of play when necessary. Meryll Kennedy added three points."
