Scholarships honor USD's Estee, Hard A 1959 graduate of The University of South Dakota School of Medicine has created two new scholarship endowments, honoring retired USD chemistry Professor Charles Estee and former USD Medicine School Dean Walter Hard.
Constantine Flevares, a retired physician of Warren, OH, created the scholarships within The USD Foundation. Flevares, a Yankton native, also received his undergraduate degree in chemistry from USD, and spent his career working in nuclear medicine. He said both men and women were important influences in his life.
The Dr. Charles Estee Scholarship honors Charles Remington Estee, who retired in 1991 after serving USD for 44 years as a professor of chemistry, including 32 years as department chair. The award will provide scholarships to outstanding students in the USD Department of Chemistry.
The Dr. Walter Hard Anatomy Scholarship Endowment honors Walter Hard, an anatomist who served as dean of the USD School of Medicine in the 1950s.
