Sixth-grade girls team places second in tourney The Vermillion sixth-grade girls brought home second place medals in their first action of the year. Playing in the Parkston Athletic Booster Club tournament, Saturday, Nov. 14, Vermillion first saw action against Mitchell. Despite first game jitters the girls led at half 10-4. A strong second half sent Vermillion into the winner's bracket with a score of 31-14. Hitting double figures was Annie Carlson with 10 points, followed by Jackie Thomas with 9 points and having an excellent first game of her career was Jaime Bernard with 3 points. Clearing the boards for Vermillion were Lindsey Davies and Jacenta Varns with 5 and 4 rebounds.
The second game of the day Vermillion matched with a strong team from Parkston. A physical first half was played with Vermillion leading 6-5. Strong defensive play in the second half by Mara Johnson and Alisha O'Connor and clutch free throw shooting by Thomas and Laura Aga led to an 18-13 win. A balanced scoring attack contributed to the win.
The championship game pitted Vermillion against Yankton. Falling behind early 12-2 and behind as many as 15 points they fought back to within 8 points early in the fourth quarter. Strong performances by Melissa Olson, Jacenta Varns and Morgan Brooks fired up Vermillion, but the strain of three games started to show and they fell to Yankton 38-23.
