St. Cloud St. tops Coyotes, 26-15 South Dakota fell to St. Cloud State last Saturday in the 1998 home finale for the Coyotes, 26-15. USD finishes the season next Saturday at North Dakota State.
The Coyotes finished the game with 293 total yards led by Peter Martin. He completed 19 of 39 passes for 260 yards and he threw four interceptions. USD was led in rushing by Jamel White with 25 yards. Defensively, the Coyotes were paced by Nathan Lake's 12 tackles. Philip Wilson and Matt Skiff had nine stops apiece, while Devin Harvey and Derek Borchers each collected eight tackles.
Trailing 7-0 early in the first quarter, the Coyotes tallied their only touchdown with 8:14 showing in the period on Martin's 78-yard touch down strike to Steve Young. The Huskies went on to take a 10-7 margin after the first period and a 19-10 lead at the half. Sophomore kicker Tim Shea booted a 20-yard field goal with 5:27 left in the second quarter. In the third period, the Coyotes got a safety from sophomore defensive end Scott Larson for a 19-12 deficit at the 4:34 mark. Shea converted a 25-yard field goal with 3:11 left in the third period, before the Huskies took a 26-15 margin with a one-yard touchdown run as the quarter closed.
