Vermillion swimmers compete in Brookings

Vermillion swimmers compete in Brookings On Nov. 14 and 15, swimmers from Vermillion competed in the 25th Annual Brookings Invitational swim meet. Over 250 swimmers from across South Dakota competed. Awards were given through eighth place.

Individual place winners for Vermillion were: 8 and U boys: Tony Jensen, first in 50 fly, second in 50 back and 50 free, third in 50 breast and 100 IM.

9 and 10 boys: AJ Manning first in 100 IM, 50 and 100 back, 50 and 100 breast, 200 and 50 free, 50 fly and second in 50 free; Shawn Veitz second in 50 and 100 breast, fourth in 100 IM and 50 free, fifth in 50 back and 100 back, eighth in 50 fly.

11 and 12 girls: Breean Solberg eighth in 50 breast.

11 and 12 boys: Justin Manning second in 50, 100 and 200 free and 100 back, third 100 IM, 100 back, fifth in 50 fly, and sixth in 50 breast.

13 and 14 boys: Tom Smith eighth in 100 and 50 free.

13 and 14 girls: Nicole Veitz first in 50, 100 and 200 free, 100 and 200 breast and third in 200 IM and 100 back.

15 and 16 boys: Mike Veitz first in 200 IM, 100 back, 50 free, 200 free, 100 fly, and 50 free, second in 200 back; Ross Solberg, third in 100 breast and 500 free, fifth in 200 IM, 100 back, 200 breast and sixth in 200 free and 100 fly.

The relay team of Nichole Veitz, Mike Veitz and Ross Solberg placed first in the 400 medley and 400 free relay. A second place finish went to the free relay team of Whitney Lawrence, Breean Solberg, Shawn Veitz and AJ Manning.

The Vermillion Swim Team is just beginning the winter 1998 competitive season. The team holds practice Sunday through Thursday from 6 to 7:30 at the USD DakotaDome. Any swimmer who wishes to join the team may contact the team president Teresa Solberg at 624-3630. This year the team also has a stong developmental program which teaches swimmers the four competitive strokes. Currently 50 swimmers are enrolled in this program.
