VHS varsity girls end 1998 season by Vicky Lio VHS's varsity girls basketball team finished its season Nov. 5 in the district championships against Elk Point.
Vermillion beat Brandon Valley 51-49 Nov. 3 to advance to the championships.
Leading scorers for Vermillion were Amanda Iverson with 23 points, Jackie Powell with 11 points, and Melissa O'Connor with 6 points.
Iverson also caught 10 rebounds. O'Connor caught 4.
Shorey Tuetken made 7 assists.
Jamie Strong lead Brandon Valley with 24 points.
"We knew Brandon Valley was a much improved team. They did a nice job at dribble penetration, which lead to us making some fouls," said Coach Doug Tuetken.
Elk Point was on the free throw line 15 more times than Vermillion.
"I was very pleased with Jackie's smart offensive playing and Kathy's free throwing percentage. I was also happy with the defensive effort of Elly Kjose and Melissa O'Connor," Tuetken said.
The championship game ended with a 51-31 Elk Point victory.
Iverson lead the team again with 17 points and 7 rebounds.
Sarah Mollet scored 5 points.
Tuetken made 7 assists and Powell made 5.
Towards the end of the second quarter, Vermillion cut the score down to a 5 point lead. Then Elk Point made a half-court shot in the last seconds. At halftime, the score was 24-16, Elk Point.
Vermillion played well defensively in the third quarter and trailed Elk Point by only 4 points at the beginning of the fourth quarter.
Elk Point's defensive intensity wore out Vermillion in the fourth.
The Tanagers ended their season with a 12-8 record.
The team had some great accomplishments. This is the first time Yankton has been beaten in school history. This is also the first time Madison and Lennox has been beaten for over 20 years.
"The seniors provided good leadership to continue the program and should be proud of what they've accomplished," Tuetken said.
