Eighth-graders earn fifth place, fifth-graders earn third place The Vermillion eighth-grade boys basketball team (2-1) opened their season Dec. 11-12 in the DakotaDome Tournament with a fifth place finish. In the first round game Friday night, they lost to the Sioux Falls Golden Gophers 36-29. Jon Brooks led the team in scoring with 12 followed by Nick Olson with 11.
Saturday morning brought the Tanagers their first win of the day over a tough Wagner team, 30-27, that they had never beaten. Leading scorers were Olson � 11, Brooks � 8 and Nick Thompson � 6. In the consolation championship Saturday afternoon Vermillion took command in the second half and opened a comfortable lead over Sioux City Grandy-Pratt, 26-14, for the fifth place win.
Leading scoring was Olson � 11, Brooks � 10. Members of the team are Dan Holoch, Rob Schaack, Bart Miller, Parker Johnson, Jeff Brevik, Michael Buckanuga, Nick Thompson, Bryce Kauer, Nick Olson, Jeff Goeden, Drew Lawrence, Jon Brooks, Matt Varnes, Anthony Begley and Donald Necklace.
The Vermillion fifth-grade boys basketball team (2-1) took home third place medals in the DakotaDome Tournament Dec. 11-12. In their first contest on Friday evening they beat the Crofton Warriors, 33-20. Saturday morning they fell victim to the Sioux Falls Storm, 40-22. They then bounced back in the afternoon to down the BonHomme Cavaliers, 50-42, for third place.
Members of the team are Kyle Brunick, Donny Stewart, Quincy Christie, Glen Foltz, Mike Hanson, Andrew Pier, Tony Kronaizl, Jeff Donnelly, A.J. Manning, Shawn Veitz, Neil Wagner, Jack Higgins, Dan Redlen and Ryan Powell.
