Fire destroys garage and contents, damages another by M. Jill Sundstrom A double garage and its contents were destroyed by an early morning fire last Friday.
A passerby noticed the flames coming from the garage at 620 East Main and notified the Vermillion Fire Department at about 2:30 a.m. on Nov. 27, according to Fire Chief Doug Brunick.
The structure, owned by Mike Rath, was fully engulfed in flames, Brunick said, when fire fighters arrived. The fire had also spread to an adjacent garage owned by Wayne James at 614 East Main.
The east wall of the James structure was burning and it received fire damage to the roof, Brunick said. But none of the contents were damaged.
A van, pickup, riding lawn mower and miscellaneous tools in the Rath garage were destroyed.
Both houses also received heat and fire damage.
Twenty-two Vermillion fire fighters responded with two engines, a ladder truck and rescue unit. They were on the scene until about 4:30 a.m. The Vermillion and Clay County ambulances were also on standby.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
