Governor's address will be televised Dec. 8 on SDPTV South Dakota's newly elected governor will step into the limelight on Tuesday, Dec. 8, with the annual budget address.

Gov. Bill Janklow will address the state at 12 noon to discuss his plans and proposals for the budget as the state Legislature prepares to convene in mid-January.

South Dakota Public Radio will carry the event live. SDPR Capital Correspondent Al Lundy will be on hand to talk to legislators and observers

afterwards to gauge their reactions.

South Dakota Public Television will air the speech at 11 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 8.

The governor's address opens South Dakota Public Broadcasting's Statehouse coverage of the 74th Legislative Session.

Janklow, the 27th and 30th governor of South Dakota was re-elected Nov. 3 with 64 percent of the vote in a four-way race for the office.

The Republican governor will begin his fourth four-year term in office in January.

He served as governor from 1979 to 1986 and returned to the governor's mansion in Pierre in 1995.

South Dakota Public Television will preview the upcoming legislative session during the South Dakota Focus talk show at 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 18. Focus host Richard Muller will lead legislative leaders through a discussion of the governor's budget address and the hot issues facing the state legislature.

South Dakota Public Broadcasting will be back in Pierre in January as SD Public Radio and Television gear up for more Statehouse coverage. The session begins Tuesday, Jan. 12, with the governor's state of the state address, scheduled at noon.

The 40-day session continues through March 6, with the last day scheduled on March 23, after a recess, to consider possible gubernatorial vetoes.

South Dakota Public Radio will cover the legislature with daily news reports that will be included in:

* The four-hour Morning Edition National Public Radio news and information show weekdays at 5 a.m. CT/4 MT.

* The two-hour All Things Considered National Public Radio news and information show weekdays at 4 p.m. CT/3 MT.

* The half-hour All Things Considered National Public Radio news show, produced by SDPR's award-winning news team, weekdays at 6 p.m.

SDPR's South Dakota Forum will focus on the Legislature twice a week during the session. The one-hour call-in show, which airs at noon weekdays (except Wednesday), will be devoted to the session on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

SDPTV will broadcast 30- to 60-minute reports Mondays through Thursdays during the session at 10:30 p.m. Each show will re-air at 11 p.m. CT the next day as a teaching tool for the government classes across the state.

Charismatic Statehouse host Al Bahe will guide viewers through the coverage.

He is familiar to South Dakotans as the former sports anchor for a television station in Sioux Falls, and also has served as communication manager for the Wildlife Division of South Dakota's Game, Fish and Parks Department.
