Public transportation service available for Vermillion residents

Public transportation service available for Vermillion residents South East Transit is a public transportation service for the Vermillion community. They began providing services August of 1997. The growth of the service happened very quickly. This fall, they began receiving Federal Transit funding through the Department of Transportation, which gives them the status of a public transportation system.

South East Transit is a public transportation service available for all residents of the Vermillion area. The service will pick you up at your home and transport you to anywhere in Vermillion. It is a bus service, so there may be other pickups or drop-offs before you get to your destination. Also, there are busy times when the buses may be booked and unable to provide additional rides. In circumstances like this, S.E.T. tries to fit you in as soon as they can before or after the time you have requested. Rides are scheduled on a first come, first served basis, so the earlier you schedule, the better chance you have of receiving the ride when you need it. There has been a big increase in ridership this fall. We are transporting more school children to day cares, more people to their jobs and more people shopping, to doctor appointments and out to eat than last year at this time. The destinations of our riders are as varied as the riders themselves.

South East Transit is beginning expanded hours this week. The hours of service are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, 7:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.; Tuesday and Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, 9:00 a.m. – 2 p.m. Weekend service was the most requested service customers wanted, so you are encouraged to call soon to schedule rides as these new hours will fill up quickly. The additional hours on Tuesday and Friday evenings allows riders to attend movies as S.E.T. will still be in operation when the movie is over and it also gives people an opportunity to go to bingo, eat out and attend evening functions at the University with the knowledge they will have a ride home.

The charge is $1.25 for a one-way trip to anywhere in Vermillion. Customers who are over 60 years of age and can not afford this may make arrangements to pay what they can afford. Customers may purchase tickets at $25.00 for 20 one-way rides. When the customer hands in a full ticket, their 21st one-way ride is free. The number to call for a ride is 624-4978. Customers are able to schedule same day rides Monday, Wednesday and Thursday between the hours of 7:00 a.m. – 7:30 p.m.; Tuesday and Friday between the hours of 7:00 a.m. – 9:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 9:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Please call between 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday – Friday to schedule rides in advance.
