Swopes earn third place medals The Vermillion Swopes sixth-grade girls basketball team earned third place medals at the DakotaDome this past weekend.
Vermillion first saw action against Gregory. Aggressive defense and a hot shooting hand contributed to a 31-1 halftime lead. The second half the Swopes stayed focused and came away with a 43-9 win. An excellent game was played by Jackie Thomas with 13 points and 6 steals. Annie Carlson and Melissa Olson each tossed in 8 points, followed by Jacenta Varns with 6, Lindsey Davies 4, and a basket each by Jaime Bernard and Laura Aga.
The second game of the day Vermillion was matched with a towering team from Sioux Falls. Falling behind 18-10, the Swopes fought back to tie 24-24 at regulation. A free throw made in the second overtime with 2 seconds remaining gave the game to Sioux Falls Force. Thomas and Varns again played excellent games scoring 11 and 7 points respectively. Aga and Carlson rounded out the scoring with 4 and 2 points.
The third place game quickly turned into a defensive struggle against Sioux City Kalins. Clutch free throw shooting in the last few minutes by Davies and Thomas sealed the 15-14 win.
