Three athletes on All-State soccer team Seventeen boys and 17 girls have been chosen by nomination and vote of the state's varsity coaches and referees as members of the first-ever South Dakota high school All-State soccer teams.
Nine schools are represented on the boys' All-State first team, including state champion Sioux Falls Lincoln with three athletes. Rapid City Stevens, which was runner-up in the first state boy's varsity tournament in October, and third-place Sioux Falls Christian also placed three men each on the honor squad.
Fourth-place Pierre/Fort Pierre and Sioux Falls Roosevelt each had two players selected for the first team while Spearfish, Aberdeen, Sioux Falls Washington, and Rapid City Central had one honored athlete apiece.
Three members of the initial girls' state championship club, Rapid City Stevens, head the All-State first team while runner-up Sioux Falls O'Gorman had four athletes recognized. Vermillion had three athletes, Kelly Peterson, Michelle Rasmussen and Amy Petekavich, selected from its third-place team. Spearfish and Rapid City Central two each, and Aberdeen, Sioux Falls Washington, and Sioux Falls Roosevelt one each.
The coaches also selected a second team and an honorable mention list for both boys and girls. Athletes did not have to be members of teams which qualified for state tourneys in order to be nominated and selected.
