USD women even record at 4-4 South Dakota improved its women's basketball record to 4-4 following a 55-50 road win over Southwest State Saturday and a 62-38 home victory over Mount Marty last Tuesday. The Coyotes open the North Central Conference season at home Saturday and Sunday against Augustana and South Dakota State.
The Coyotes, who led Southwest State, 24-16, at halftime, were sparked by Kelly Gese. The junior guard tossed in a career-high 27 points and 10 rebounds, along with recording five assists and one steal. Bethany Koehler had 12 points and Maegan Prickett added six points. USD, which committed only nine turnovers, shot 34.4 percent from the field. Each team had 43 rebounds.
South Dakota, which fell to Mount Marty in the season opener (75-62), reversed itself the second-time around with a 24-point win over the Lancers. USD shot 42.4 percent compared to 29.8 for Mount Marty. The Coyotes grabbed a 32-18 halftime lead and outscored the Lancers, 30-20, in the second half. Koehler led USD with 21 points. Gese had 16 points, three steals and two assists. Alissa Koronkiewicz pulled down nine rebounds along with five points, two assists and two blocked shots. Prickett added seven points, three assists, two blocks and two steals.
