Vermillion Tanager gymnasts open their 1998-1999 season The Vermillion gymnastics team started the season with two meets last week. The Tanagers traveled to Sioux Falls for a triangular with Sioux Falls Lincoln and Brandon Valley. The Tanager gymnasts performed quite well for their first meet of the season. The Tanagers finished third in the triangular scoring 96.9 points. Sioux Falls Lincoln won the meet with a score of 108.2, while Brandon Valley was second with a score of 100.5. Tanagers gymnasts that placed in the meet were Anne Dambowy, placing third on beam (6.7), fifth on bars (6.7), and fifth on vault (7.7), Lynn Lewison was third on bars with a score of 6.9, and Terri Upward placed fifth in all-around with a score of 24.4. "I was very pleased with our performance for our first meet," said Upward. "It was great to see our young gymnasts perform with enthusiasm."
The junior varsity team finished third (69.4). The JV team placed several gymnasts in the top five. Deepti Naik finished second in beam, Beth Pier fifth on bars, Amy Schoellerman fourth on bars, and Meganne Hovden was fifth on bars.
In a dual with the highly ranked Sioux Falls Roosevelt Rough Riders on Thursday night, the Tanagers improved their score to 104.0 points, but fell short of the Rough Riders 134.2 points. The only Tanager gymnast placing for the Tanagers in the top five was Anne Dambowy on the balance beam where she placed third with a score of 7.3. "We were up against a tough team tonight," said Upward. "It's tough for us to place girls in the top five against this team. However, we had some great performances tonight from our girls. Several girls had personal bests tonight."
The next action for the Vermillion Tanagers is the Wagner Invitational on Dec. 12. This meet is followed up on Monday, Dec. 14 when the Tanager Lady Gymnasts host West Central at the Vermillion High School gym.
