Benefit is planned for Jaime Hanson

Benefit is planned for Jaime Hanson Friends, family, local organizations and community businesses are organizing benefit activities to help Jaime Hanson, Vermillion, offset medical expenses she incurred after being involved in a car accident last September.

Jaime, 21, the daughter of Scott and Jane Hanson of Vermillion, was on her way to work in Yankton last Sept. 23 when she lost control of her vehicle on Highway 50.

"She doesn't remember the accident," her father said. "But the vehicle rolled twice in the median and she was thrown out on the first roll."

Jaime suffered a mild concussion, a broken collar bone and multiple fractures in her pelvis.

She was taken by air ambulance to Marian Health Center in Sioux City, IA, where she was stabilized for a week before being sent to Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, MN.

There, she underwent pelvic reconstructive surgery. Following two weeks of rehabilitation, she returned to Vermillion.

"She moved back to her own house about four weeks ago," Scott said. "And she no longer has to use a wheelchair, but she does have to walk with crutches. She goes back to Minneapolis on Jan. 25 for another checkup and hopefully they will let her come off the crutches then."

Jaime, the former night manager at Jones' Food Center in Vermillion, continues to undergo rehabilitation at Marian Health Center three times a week, but throughout the ordeal, she has remained positive.

"We're really fortunate with that," Scott said. "Her spirits have always been good."

The Coyote Country Rodeo Club, the Eagles Club and many local businesses, friends and family will host a benefit dance, quilt raffle, balloon pop prizes and bachelor auction for Jaime on Feb. 13 at the Eagles Club in Vermillion from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Admission is $6 per couple and $4 per person.

Bachelors to be auctioned off to the highest bidder are Shane O'Connor, Rich Schoellerman, Todd Mockler, Bruce Hart, Aaron Arnie, Cliff Deverell, Mike Flemming and Ken Stoos.

The quilt, made by Janelle (Phelps) Smith, will be on display at the following businesses before the benefit: Jones' Food Center, Jan. 15-21; Community First State Bank, Jan. 22-28; and Vermillion Beauty Shop, Jan. 29-Feb. 13.

The balloon pop prizes have been donated by many area businesses.

Balloons may be purchased for $5 each and each will have a prize, valued at $10 or more, inside.

A fund has also been set up for Jaime at CorTrust Bank in Vermillion.
