Chuang chosen for music competition The 1999 Young Musician Competition Preliminary auditions took place Sunday, Jan. 17, at Augustana College. This state and regional competition for piano, strings, brass, and woodwinds is open to all full-time students through their senior year in high school. This year, 21 students participated in the preliminaries, and 11 will move on to the finals on March 13. The competition is designed to promote the growth of instrumental music in the state and region.
Huan-Ching Chuang is a student at Vermillion Middle School and is also a special gifted student of The University of South Dakota. Since 1993, she has participated in the Kuang Fu Primary School Orchestra, the Shuang Shih Junior Middle School Orchestra, and the Sun Rise Orchestra. This year, she has performed seven recitals at The University of South Dakota and also had the pleasure of being violin soloist with The University of South Dakota Orchestra. She is also a percussionist in the Vermillion Middle School Band. She is currently studying piano with Dr. Susan Gray and violin with Dr. John Thomson.
