Dakota Valley falls to VHS in volleyball by David Lias The Vermillion Tanager volleyball team defeated Dakota Valley 15-0, 15-4 in competition held Jan. 11 in Vermillion.
The Tanagers were 37 of 42, or 88 percent in serving, with 5 aces. Leading servers were Nancy Heine, 10 of 10 with 2 aces and 10 points; Melissa Rydell, 7 of 7 with 5 points; and Laura Burcham, 7 of 7 with 1 ace and 6 points. The Tanagers received 10 of 14 serves, or 71 percent.
"We went out in this match with some definite goals and we did a good job of reaching them," said Coach Jody Zeller. "Our hitting was tremendous compared to the Southeast Area Classic and our serving was better."
The Tanagers made 20 of 21 sets, and scored 13 assists. Leading setters were Shorey Tuetken, with 17 sets and 10 assists; and Amanda Iverson, with 4 sets and 3 assists.
Vermillion was successful in 30 of 31, or 97 percent, of its attacks. Attack leaders were Amanda Iverson, who was 9 of 10 with 6 kills; Laura Burcham, who was 3 of 3 with 3 kills; Leslie Larson, who was 5 of 5 with 3 kills; Jana Prasek, who was 3 of 3 with 2 kills, and Nancy Heine, who was 2 of 2 with 2 kills.
"The area we still continue to struggle with is serve receive; we have a lot of work to do here," said Zeller. "When this comes together, we will be a team to look out for."
The Tanagers made 5 of 6 blocks, and scored 2 ace blocks. Block leaders were Melissa Rydell, with 2 blocks and 1 ace block, Laura Burcham, with 2 blocks, and Leslie Larson, with 1 block and 1 ace block.
Following this competition, the Tanagers' team record was 6-7 and their conference record was 1-0.
The team's next meet is the Madison Invitational on Saturday.
