Gary Keller named USD communication specialist The University of South Dakota has announced the appointment of Gary Keller as communication specialist in the USD Division of University Relations.
Keller, formerly film office coordinator for the South Dakota Department of Tourism in Pierre since 1989, is a national award-winning writer and producer. His appointment is pending approval of the South Dakota Board of Regents. As communications specialist, Keller will write news releases, work on university publications and the USD web site. He will also do photography, work with the media, including area, regional and national press, among other public relations duties.
"He brings a wealth of experience and expertise," said Roger Kozak, executive assistant to the president and head of the Division of University Relations.
Originally of Lawton, IA, Keller was video/film promotions coordinator for the Department of Tourism and the Governor's Office of Economic Development (1987-89), audio visual manager with AVES Audio Visual Corporation in Des Moines, IA (1985-87), corporate video specialist with Massey Ferguson, Ltd., Des Moines, IA (1984-85), producer/programming assistant with Sooland Cablecom Corporation in Sioux City, IA (1980-84) and a copywriter and producer with Mohawk Advertising Agency in Mason City, IA (1980).
A 1979 graduate of Iowa State University (journalism and mass communication), Keller created and developed the South Dakota Film Commission program. He worked closely with the Academy Award winning team of Dances with Wolves from pre-production through video marketing and subsequent film productions in South Dakota, including the recent Bruce Willis film Armageddon. He has worked in media relations, special events and sales, promotional video/audio productions, advertising and promotion, strategic planning, marketing, community relations and management and information management.
A Governor's State of the State Address honoree in 1998, Keller won a National Travel Industry of America Award (direct mail) in 1998 and an Association of Film Commissioners International (AFCI) Marketing Award (direct mail) in October 1998. He won the Best of Show at the AFCI International Location Expo Trade Show in both 1997 and 1998. He was also a national Telly Award Winner (television commercial writer/
producer) in 1980. Keller has served as committee chair for the Association of Film Commissioners International (1993) and was a board member for the Deadwood Film Festival (1994). He was a board member for Dare to Care, Inc. (1995).
He and his wife Keley have one 7-year-old son, Garret.
