Dave Hanson and Thad Roche, both ninth-graders, helped fill the void Vermillion had since the team was playing without three starters, Bo Nelson, Derrick Brown and Tim Broderson.
"The efforts were commendable but a flurry of Lennox's 3-point baskets in the second half spread the lead," said Vermillion JV Coach Lance Luitjens.
The Tanager JV trailed 16-7 after the first quarter, the score was 23-23 at halftime, and the Tanager JV trailed 38-32 going into the final period.
In the opening period, Lennox's Kruse and Rothenberger scored 12 points. Eight points by Kruse paced Lennox to an early lead.
"A slight height advantage aided their rebounding," Coach Luitjens said.
In the second quarter, Vermillion's Filipovic scored 10 points to aid a comeback to tie the halftime score.
"Brett Hogen's rebounding was a key to the comeback," said Coach Luitjens.
Vermillion JV saw its record fall to 14-3, while Lennox upped its mark to 8-2.
Vermillion JV connected on 8 of 16 from the line while the Orioles connected on 7 of 19 free throw tries.
The Tanager JV had some excellent individual performances in defeat.
"Eddie Filipovic scored 15 points and 3 rebounds," Coach Luitjens said.
