Tanager grapplers win 3 at Harrisburg by David Lias The Vermillion Tanager wrestling squad returned home from the Harrisburg Invitational Jan. 16 with three out of possible four victories.
The Tanager grapplers defeated Flandreau 40-21, and were victorious over West Central by a score of 42-30.
Vermillion continued its winning ways that day, defeating Beresford 57-16. The team's only loss was a 9-point deficit to Harrisburg, 27-36. Vermillion's season record is now 8-13.
Individual champions for Vermillion were Justin Griffith, who won his match by a score of 3-0 in the 140 pound division; Adam Koller, with a 4-0 victory in the 130 pound division; and Chris Sinkie, who defeated his opponent in the 171 pound division 4-0.
"We came out with our intensity high and kept it for four matches," said Coach Bret Jones. "I thought we wrestled well against Flandreau, and that set the tone for the rest of the day.
"I was real happy with the performance of Elliot Hasse," Jones added. "He finished the day 3-1 and wrestled well in his one defeat."
The Tanager wrestling squad's next action is scheduled for Jan. 23, when it competes in the Winner Invitational.
