Tanager varsity falls victim to Yankton's second-half rally The Vermillion Tanagers fell victim to a second-half rally and were downed by the Yankton High School Varsity Bucks 60-53 in boys basketball Jan. 23 at home.
VHS had led by two at halftime.
Beau Blouin scored 13 points, sank 9 out of 10 free throws, and grabbed 7 rebounds. Cory Novak added 11 points, and was 5 out of 6 at the charity stripe. And Jordan Thompson scored 10 points all in the first half.
The Tanagers fell behind 14-10 at the end of the first period, led 28-26 at halftime, and then trailed 44-39 going into the fourth quarter.
Numerous turnovers and fouls plagued the contest, as the referees whistled the two teams for 41 turnovers and 47 fouls.
"We set a goal to outrebound our opponent, and we achieved it," said VHS Coach Troy Terronez. "Now we have to get everything clicking at the same time. We must move from doing a great job within one or two areas, to doing a great job in all areas."
In the final period, Brandon May of Yankton, in the final two minutes, went 5 of 5 from the free throw line to secure the victory.
The loss dropped VHS to a record of 4-6, while Yankton improved to 2-8.
VHS made 2 of 7 three-point tries and connected on 16 of 18 from the line. The Tanagers connected on 17 of 37 from the field, while Yankton was 21 of 46 from the field. Yankton connected on 4 of 11 three-pointers and hit 14 of 23 free throw attempts.
Although defeated, the Tanagers had a number of fine individual efforts.
"Nick Mayer did a nice job on the point guard position by getting us into our offense and controlling the tempo of the game," Coach Terronez said. "He also finished with 5 rebounds."
