Tanagers defeat Knights with last minute rally Vermillion's Jordan Thompson stole the ball near midcourt and drove for the winning lay-up with 51 seconds left in the game as the Vermillion Tanagers rallied to nip the Sioux Falls O'Gorman Knights 58-56 in boys basketball Jan. 16 at the Dakota Valley Classic.
The Tanagers had led by 9 in the third quarter.
This was a victory over an upper class (AA) team. VHS improved its season mark to 4-3, while O'Gorman fell to 3-4.
Vermillion's Doug Hanson scored a game high 28 points, and had 6 rebounds and 4 blocked shots.
"Jordan Thompson stepped his game up in a time of need," said VHS Coach Troy Terronez. "His 3-point basket to tie the game and his steal at the end were tremendous contributions to our win."
The Tanagers fell behind 23-14 after the first quarter, but advantages of 14-10 and 17-8 in the second and third quarters gave them a lead of 45-41 going into the final period.
VHS won the game from the field, making only 6 of 9 charity tosses compared with 24 of 31 for O'Gorman. The Tanagers committed only 5 turnovers in the victory.
"When our zone was broken by 50 percent 3-point shooting by O'Gorman, our players did an outstanding job with man-to-man defense against a larger team," said Coach Terronez.
In the first quarter, O'Gorman opened the game scoring five 3-point baskets in the first 2:30 minutes (3 by Kent Ernster and 2 by Travis Kneip).
In the third period, led by Vermillion's Hanson, who scored a 3-pointer and had 7 total points, every starter scored a basket or more while holding O'Gorman to 1 basket.
"This was a super defensive effort," said Coach Terronez.
VHS made 4 of 16 three-point tries. The Tanagers hit 20 of 44 field goals, while O'Gorman was 13 of 37 from the field. O'Gorman connected on 6 of 15 three-point attempts.
The winners needed good efforts from several performers.
"This was an exceptional defensive performance by every team member! Each player contributing to the scoring offense," Coach Terronez said.
The Tanagers will play Friday, Jan. 22 at Lennox.
