Tanagers take Madison in Jan. 5 volleyball action Vermillion High School's volleyball team opened its Big 8 Conference season with a 2-1 win over Madison Jan. 5.
The Tanagers opened the match with a solid 15-2 win but Madison roared back in the second game to win 15-2. In the deciding third game, Vermillion took the game and match 15-12.
Vermillion, 4-4 overall after the Madison match, was led by Megan Tolsma with 9 points, 6 digs, and 3 assists. Jana Prasek totaled 7 points with 6 aces. Laura Burcham added 6 points and 5 kills. Amanda Iverson led the offense with 9 kills and shorey Tuetken set 18 assists and dug 6. Melissa Rydell blocked 6.
Madison easily won the JV match 15-2, 15-3. Vermillion took the freshman match 15-2, 15-12.
"Our serving was really impressive," said Coach Jody Zeller, "with only two missed serves in 53 attempts. Our passing is starting to come along also."
"Defensively, we still have a ton of work to do. We are still struggling with where to be and when. Melissa Rydell came through with some key blocks, but our overall team blocking has a lot of improving to do," she added.
