USD women notch first NCC win with 73-61 win over Morningside South Dakota led throughout the game in posting its first North Central Conference triumph with a 73-61 verdict over Morningside last Saturday in Sioux City. The Coyotes, who are at St. Cloud State and Minnesota State Friday and Saturday, improved to 5-11 overall and 1-6 in the NCC.
For the eighth time this season Kelly Gese scored at least 20 points in a game with a game-high 25 against Morningside. She was 11-for-16 from the field along with four assists and four steals. USD, which took a 30-22 halftime lead, had a balanced attack with three other players in double scoring figures. Bethany Koehler finished with 18 points, including 6-for-9 shooting from three-point range � two short of the USD school record of eight set by Shelby Petersen in 1992. With USD leading, 40-35, at the 13:22 mark, Koehler nailed four three-pointers during a five-minute span that fueled the Coyotes to a 14-point spread at 54-40.
Amy Heismeyer scored 11 points and Maegan Prickett had 10 points. The Coyotes, in their best offensive effort of the season, shot 52.0 percent from the field, including 57.1 percent from three-point range (8-for-14). USD, however, was outrebounded, 38-25, led by Alissa Koronkiewicz and Katrina Merrill with five boards apiece.
