VHS Tanager JV team defeats the Bucks 66-55 The VHS JV Tanager basketall team pulled away in the second half to down the Yankton High School Junior Varsity Bucks 66-55 in boys basketball Jan. 23 at Vermillion.
Vermillion JV had led by only 2 in the third period.
Eddie Filipovic had a great game with 21 points and he was 9 out of 12 from the free throw line. Brett Hogen, with 16 points, and Jeremi Cowman, with 15 points, were also major contributors.
The Tanager JV trailed 16-14 after the first quarter, went into the locker room up 28-26 at halftime, and then led 46-38 going into the final period.
"We really played well with new players to work with," said Vermillion JV Coach Lance Luitjens.
In the third period, Cowman scored 7 points and Filipovic scored 6 points.
"The total of a 6 point gain placed Yankton in a position where fouling became necessary for them," Coach Luitjens said.
In the last two periods, the Tanagers played a good second half, outscoring the Bucks 38-29.
"Vermillion went 14-20 in the fourth quarter," said Coach Luitjens.
Vermillion JV improved its season mark to 7-4, while YHS JV fell to 5-6.
Vermillion JV sank 29 of 43 from the line while the Bucks JV made 20 of 32 free throw attempts.
Several significant individual efforts contributed to the win.
"Freshman Dave Hanson had 5 points despite playing limited minutes," Coach Luitjens said.
