Volleyball team beats Viborg by David Lias The Vermillion Tanager volleyball team defeated Viborg 15-12, 15-3 in competition held Jan. 7 in Viborg.
The Tanagers were 41 of 45, or 91 percent in serving, with 13 aces. Leading servers were Shorey Tuetken, 13 of 13 with 4 aces and 10 points; Amanda Iverson, 8 of 9 with 4 aces and 6 points; Melissa Rydell, 7 of 7 with 5 points, and Lana Johnson, 3 of 4 with 1 ace and 3 points.
"Our serving percentage was up again in this match and they also maintained their ace serves," said Coach Jody Zeller. "Our defense is constantly improving and it looked pretty good in this match."
The Tanagers made 37 of 39 sets, and scored 17 assists. Leading setter was Shorey Tuetken, with 39 sets and 17 assists.
Vermillion was successful in 41 of 54 attacks. Attack leaders were Amanda Iverson, who was 17 of 21 with 8 kills; Laura Burcham, who was 4 of 6 with 3 kills; Jana Prasek, who was 6 of 9 with 2 kills; and Melissa Rydell, who was 5 of 7 with 2 kills, and Kelly Peterson, who was 2 of 3 with 2 kills.
"The girls are learning to read the hits so they know where to be, therefore we are doing a much better job getting the ball to the setter," Coach Zeller said. "This enables us to run our offense and have fun with it."
The Tanagers' team record after this match was 5-4, with a conference record of 1-0. Its next meet is the Mitchell Invitational on Saturday.
