WC Trojans’ rally defeats VHS 66-64

WC Trojans' rally defeats VHS 66-64 West Central's Josh Mueller made two free throws with 10 seconds left in the game as the Vermillion Tanagers fell victim to a fourth-quarter rally and were nipped by the West Central High School Varsity Trojans 66-64 in boys basketball Jan. 19 at home.

VHS had led by four after the third quarter.

"Vermillion's Nick Mayer hit the rim of the basket on a 2 point attempt at the buzzer on the rebound of Iverson's shot," said VHS Coach Troy Terronez of the clinching moment.

WHS Varsity stands at 10-0. VHS's season mark fell to 4-4.

Beau Blouin lead Vermillion with 19 points. Derrick Brown was 3 of 3 on 3 pointers. Mayer was also 3 of 3 on 3 pointers.

"Bo Nelson had five blocked shots," said Coach Terronez.

The Tanagers jumped ahead 14-13 at the end of the first period, led 27-24 at halftime, and then held a lead of 47-43 after the third period.

Both teams were sharp from three-point range, with the Tanagers 8 of 14 and the Trojans 5 of 8.

"We played intense basketball for the entire game, which is what we need in order to be successful," said Coach Terronez. "However, our rebounding must improve. We can't afford to give them two or three opportunities to score."

In the final quarter, at six minutes, Vermillion's Derrick Brown hit two consecutive 3 pointers but West Central's Josh Mueller answered with consecutive 3 pointers.

"This is an indication of the closeness of the score throughout the game as both teams traded baskets continously," Coach Terronez said.

VHS hit 10 of 18 free throw attempts. The Tanagers made 23 of 41 field goals, while WHS Varsity was 24 of 50 from the field. The Trojans sank 12 of 20 free throw tries.

Even with the loss, the Tanagers had several good individual efforts.

"It's nice to see new players improve their performances each night," Coach Terronez said. "Bo Nelson and Derrick Brown did an outstanding job, both offensively and defensively. Now they need to continue at that level and others must step up as well. This comes from the solid leadership of Beau Blouin and Nick Mayer, who also had outstanding games."
