West Central hands VHS JV a tough loss The VHS JV Basketball Tanager lost a tough one to the West Central High JV Trojans 55-52 in boys basketball Jan. 19 at Vermillion.
Vermillion's Tim Russell scored 14 points, had 2 blocked shots, 1 assist and 2 rebounds.
The Tanager JV trailed 16-12 at the end of the first period, trailed 29-26 after the second quarter, and then trailed 42-39 after the third quarter.
The Vermillion JV lost the game from the free throw line, making 7 of 13 charity tosses compared with 15 of 25 for WC JV.
"The kids played hard, and had they executed better, they'd have won the game," said Vermillion JV Coach Lance Luitjens.
In the opening quarter, the Trojans' Ryan Geppert and Danny Duerksen each hit 3 pointers to spark a 16 point first quarter total.
"Early foul trouble for Vermillion was a contributing factor," Coach Luitjens said. "The remaining three quarters were scored evenly."
In the fourth period, West Central's Brett Stofferahn scored all of his 7 points, thanks, in part, to 5 free throws.
The loss dropped Vermillion JV to a record of 7-5, while WC JV improved to 8-1.
The Tanager JV had some excellent individual performances in defeat.
"Eddie Filipovic came through with key baskets down the stretch," Coach Luitjens said.
