Coyote women split games The South Dakota womens basketball team posted a split Feb. 19-20.
The Coyotes defeated Minnesota State-Mankato, 50-45, before falling to St. Cloud State, 75-52.
The Coyotes led Minnesota State for much of the first half. USD took its biggest lead of 9 points at 20-11 with 8:02 showing only to have the Mavericks rally and close the deficit to 22-20 at halftime.
It remained close in the second half with neither team holding more than a 7-point lead. The Mavericks took a 32-31 margin with 13:33 remaining in the game and held the lead for more than 10 minutes until Kelly Gese hit a jumper that gave the Coyotes a 43-42 edge with 2:23 left.
USD never trailed again in posting its third conference win.
Gese was 10-for-22 from the field and she finished with 22 points and 4 assists. Amy Heismeyer turned in a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Alissa Koronkiewicz and Katrina Merrill tallied 6 points apiece.
USD shot 35.2 percent compared to 30.2 for the Mavericks.
The Coyotes, who committed only 9 turnovers against Minnesota State, finished with 21 in the loss to St. Cloud State. USD trailed only 31-30 at halftime, before the Huskies went on a 44-22 scoring spree in the second half with 53.1 percent shooting compared to 33.3 for the Coyotes.
Gese was the lone USD player in double scoring figures with 19. Bethany Koehler had 7 points with 6 for Merrill. Maggie Gorman chipped in 5 points with 4 a piece for Maegan Prickett and Heismeyer, who led with 9 rebounds.
