Endangered species bill passes by Jaimi Reimer Black bears, mountain lions, and wolves are one step closer to being taken off the threatened species list in South Dakota.

The Senate passed, 26-6, HB1040, on Feb. 8. The bill repeals certain restrictions regarding the hunting of black bears, mountain lions, and wolves and establishes civil damages for the unlawful taking of mountain lions.

The mountain lions have repeatedly been spotted in both eastern and western South Dakota in recent years. The bill passed the House 65-3 Jan. 26.

The bill now awaits action from the Governor.
