Freshmen Tanagers defeat C-Hawks 38-30 The VHS freshmen Tanagers pulled away in the last stanza to defeat the Canton High School Freshman C-Hawks 38-30 in boys basketball Jan. 29 at Vermillion.
The game had been tied 27-all heading into the final quarter.
Thad Roche had 17 points and 6 rebounds.
"It was a really nice win for us in that we got back on the winning track after losing 3 in a row," said Vermillion Coach Devin Schwiesow. "Offensively, we showed more patience and defensively we did a nice job on the boards."
The Tanagers trailed 7-6 at the end of the first period, led 21-12 at halftime, and then led 27-18 after the third quarter.
In the second quarter, Vermillion's Jeff Gilbertson sparked a 15 point second quarter outcome with a 3 pointer and 2 free throws.
"Also, Roche had 6 points and Brett Mockler scored 4 leading to a 9 point advantage at halftime," Coach Schwiesow said.
Vermillion improved its season mark to 5-4, while CHS fell to 6-3.
Vermillion made 1 of 2 three-point tries and made 3 of 7 free throw attempts. The Tanagers connected on 17 of 51 field goal attempts, while CHS was 12 of 50 from the field. CHS made 2 of 12 three-point attempts and connected on 4 of 10 free throw tries.
