Freshmen Tanagers squeak by the Huskies The VHS freshmen Tanagers squeaked past the Elk Point- Jefferson High School Huskies 31-30 in boys basketball Feb. 16 at Vermillion.
"Both teams had trouble with the zone defense; however, in the second half we did a better job of taking the ball to the basket," said Vermillion Coach Devin Schwiesow.
The Tanagers led 7-6 after the first quarter, led 12-10 at halftime, and then led 21-17 going into the fourth quarter.
Vermillion improved its season mark to 7-6, while EP-J fell to 6-7.
Vermillion hit 0 of 2 three-point tries and made 5 of 15 free throw attempts. The Tanagers sank 13 of 32 field goals, while EP-J was 11 of 25 from the field. EP-J hit 2 of 6 three-point attempts and sank 6 of 7 free throw tries.
The close win had several contributors to the cause.
"Chris Hoffman had his best offensive game of the year putting in 10 of our 31 points," Coach Schwiesow said.
